Instantel Partners with Brüel & Kjær to Provide Noise & Vibration Monitoring Services to the Construction Industry

Large infrastructure construction projects take several years to complete and are often located within built-up areas. This can give rise to significant noise and vibration nuisance which, if left unmanaged, can lead to project delays and significantly increased costs. On July 18, 2008 The Stanley Works completed the purchase of the outstanding shares of Xmark Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of VeriChip Corporation. Instantel Selects the Winners of the 2007 Instantel Innovation Awards

Instantel is proud to announce the winners of the 2007 Instantel Innovation Awards. Created to honor outstanding achievements in vibration monitoring the world over, the Awards are presented to organizations exhibiting innovative technological applications with unprecedented success.

Dynamic Consult International (DCI), France, was selected for their innovative work on the construction of Tunnel T33 in Monaco. The project is to be done in two phases – creation of accesses to the future tunnel with the diversion of utilities through a concrete underground gallery; and the creation of the tunnel using explosives. To date, a total of nineteen monitoring points have been installed, using Instantel® vibration monitors and incorporating the monitor’s Auto Call Home™ feature.

The major challenge faced by DCI is that the future tunnel location is surrounded by three large buildings, several homes, two existing tunnels, a high voltage transformer and three of the caves of the world renowned Exotic Garden of Monaco.

"We felt very strongly that DCI was a natural selection for the Award," commented Ron Mask, Sales Manager for Instantel. "Not only did DCI professionals encounter a very challenging environment, but the acceptable monitoring levels were far narrower than most other monitoring projects in many countries: 1 mm/s for the block of rock, 1.5 mm for the three caves, 2 mm/s for the existing tunnel and high voltage transformer and 3 mm/s for the buildings and homes nearby."

Datum Monitoring Services Limited, United Kingdom, was also awarded an Innovation Award for their work on the Partick Station Redevelopment Project in Glasgow, UK. Datum was tasked to supply a real time vibration monitoring system during the construction of a new ticket office at the Partick Rail Station. Located in close proximity to residential properties, rail and subway structures, the piling work was in progress 24 hours a day.

Bob Turnbull, Product and Service Manager for Instantel noted, "What made this project even more difficult was that the effects of the trains passing through the tunnel and overhead of the railway structure had to be discounted when measuring event data to the prescribed limit. This was accomplished by means of an auxiliary trigger using infra-red beams to display a separate visible light to halt piling. High voltage cables, sensors up to 100 m from the monitors and extensions added to the modems made for a very technically challenging set up – something that Datum was able to accomplish to a successful conclusion, and the end result was reliable monitoring for their client."

The Instantel Innovation Awards will be presented to the winners at the International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE) Conference January 28, 2007 in Nashville, TN.

Instantel Unveils InstaLink™ – Web Based Vibration Monitoring

Instantel, a leading supplier of vibration monitors for the mining, construction and geotechnical markets, has just launched their latest vibration monitoring solution – InstaLink™ web based vibration monitoring.

InstaLink leverages the Internet to automate the process of transferring vibration data directly from an Instantel vibration monitor to a secure, password-protected web site for viewing by approved stakeholders. Using the popular Instantel Auto Call Home™ automated call-in feature allows Instantel monitors to send vibration data through a variety of modems to a PC, immediately after it is recorded. The new InstaLink reporting system takes this process one step further - automatically forwarding the data to the secure InstaLink database. Once there, users and their pre-authorized stakeholders (Inspectors, Project Engineers, contractors, etc.) can log in and view vibration data from their project(s) through the user’s own customized InstaLink website page.

Ideal for projects with time-sensitive reporting requirements to many stakeholders, or for sites that have many monitoring points, InstaLink provides users and their stakeholders with reliable and immediate distribution of their data as soon as it is collected.

Instantel Vibration Monitors Working to Help Define Turkish Vibration Standards

Instantel Dealer Elite Electronik A.S. was recently awarded a tender from the Istanbul University, Mining Engineering Department, to supply 16 monitoring stations in support of a three-year countrywide project to establish national damage risk criteria for blasting activities.

Vibration from blasting activities at various sites throughout the country will be monitored using the new Instantel monitors. This data will be analysed along with the structural characteristics of buildings and their response to the vibration. The results of this study will be used to establish new Turkish vibration standards for blasting.

“Environmental issues such as vibration and air blast are often faced and discussed on projects where blasting is inevitable, such as; mining, quarrying, civil construction, tunneling and pipeline operations. There are not only safety concerns – it can also influence the psychology of the neighboring people.”

“Those responsible for the blasting work have to create blasting designs which do not cause damage to the residents or their environment by using the principals of controlled blasting techniques. These types of designs are only able to be created by systematic experimental studies to create an optimal standard.” Project Executive, Professor Dr. Ali Kahriman, notes.

Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. and University of Alberta Inaugural Winners of an Instantel Innovation Award

Instantel is proud to announce that Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., in conjunction with the University of Alberta, are inaugural winners of an Instantel Innovation Award. Created to honor outstanding achievements the world over, the awards are presented to organizations exhibiting innovative technological applications with unprecedented success.

Diavik and the University of Alberta were chosen for their innovative environmental research project to protect the fragile fish habitat within the blasting zone of the Diavik Diamond Mine. Diavik is mining gem diamonds from ore bodies formerly located under the shallow water of Lac de Gras in the Northwest Territories, Canada.

The study, a joint collaboration between Diavik and the University of Alberta Biological Sciences and Geophysics Departments, utilizes sensors connected to Instantel® Minimate Plus vibration monitors. The sensors are designed for deep-ocean reservoir monitoring, but were adapted by Instantel to work with the Minimate monitor. “In September 2003, four fish habitat study sites were chosen , three of them within the blast effects area and one outside, which will serve as a reference site,” said Marek Welz, a researcher at the University of Alberta. “Part of Diavik’s commitment to the community is the protection of fish and fish habitat,”added Scott Wytrychowski, Diavik’s Manager of Environment. “And we’re working hard to meet that commitment.”


WPC Engineering Inaugural Winner of an Instantel Innovation Award

Instantel is proud to announce that WPC Engineering, Environmental & Construction Services has been chosen as an inaugural winner of an Instantel Innovation Award. Created to honor outstanding achievements the world over, the awards are presented to organizations exhibiting innovative technological applications with unprecedented success.

WPC Engineering was selected for their innovative pile driving work on the Old Charleston High School Development Project in South Carolina – a 1920’s school which was being transformed into the new home of the Medical University of South Carolina’s College of Health Professions Complex. In addition, an adjacent building for the complex and a parking garage were also constructed. The work was unique in that the original historic brick façade was to be preserved and incorporated into the new design. “Given the concerns that pile driving vibrations might damage the brick walls or disrupt nearby sensitive medical equipment, extensive monitoring was required,” noted WPC President Reg Christopher. In all, three Instantel® Minimate Plus™ vibration monitors were used to measure ground vibration during the pile driving.

Based on their geotechnical investigation, WPC determined that low displacement steel HP piles should be selected for the project. They performed a pre-condition survey of the existing brick façade and adjacent residential and commercial buildings. Next, WPC conducted high strain dynamic pile testing to determine final pile production lengths and pile driving installation criteria. This testing resulted in reduction of pile length and a savings of over $200,000 to the project owner.


Kalliotekniikka Consulting Engineers OY Winners of an Instantel Innovation Award

Instantel is proud to announce that Kalliotekniikka Consulting Engineers OY, is an inaugural winner of an Instantel Innovation Award. Created to honor outstanding achievements the world over, the awards are presented to organizations exhibiting innovative technological applications with unprecedented success.

Kalliotekniikka was chosen for its work on the Kamppi Center project, the largest single construction project ever undertaken in Finland. Situated in the very heart of Helsinki, the area has a rich history. Most recently, the area had been used as a coach terminal and parking area, serving the many museums, hotels and other city amenities nearby. Now, the site is slated for yet another transformation – once completed in 2006, it will house coach terminals below grade, and include an expanded underground complex, complete with a goods station, city coach terminal and new parking facilities. The site will also be home to a new department store and apartment buildings, and include additional commercial and office premises, allowing for full usage of a prime real estate area in the city.

To create this multi-use complex, nearly 2000 individual blasts were completed to remove over 200,000 m3 of rock, lying directly over an existing metro station and within meters of two museums, two hotels, the Helsinki Transformer Station and several other sensitive buildings. An automated vibration-monitoring network, BlastView™, was created by Kalliotekniikka, and Instantel vibration monitors were installed at 37 discrete monitoring points, located in nearby metro locations and the surrounding area.

After each blast, vibration data was automatically collected and transferred from the monitoring network to a server database, accessible on a password-protected web site. Engineers first verified that the recorded levels were in compliance with established limits, and then were able determine and adjust for trends in blast-induced vibration.

“What impressed us most with this project was that Kalliotekniikka had multiple challenges – a demanding schedule, extremely low vibration limits, high penalties and fines for vibration violations, close proximity to office buildings, hotels, and a museum surrounding all four sides of the project as well as the city subway station only meters below the excavation. Utilizing the Auto Call Home™ feature of our Minimate Plus™ vibration monitors, Kalliotekniikka developed their own unique internet based monitoring system.” remarked Ron Mask, Instantel Sales Manager. "All stakeholders for the project, onsite and offsite, were able to view the vibration limits from up to 50 monitors in less than 2 minutes after each blast. - a major first in our industry."

Accessible through the Instantel web site www.instantel.com, Instantel users can access InfoChange anytime, review Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) - even log in to send a specific question to the Instantel technical support team should they not find the information they require immediately on-line. Not solely an information tool, InfoChange also makes it easier for customers to return equipment to the Instantel factory for calibration or service. Subscribers may request Return Material Authorization numbers (RMAs) and receive their RMA number and shipment details any time of the day, immediately upon receipt of their request. Subscribers are also able to track the status of their service work at any point in the process: from the equipment's arrival at the factory to the goods going back out our shipping dock to the customer.

Instantel Retires Blastmate® Series II Vibration Monitors

All good things must come to an end – the Instantel® Blastmate® II vibration monitor will cease production in 2004. Introduced to the industry in 1991, the Blastmate II instrument is widely acknowledged as the pioneer of the technology behind the vibration instruments you now see today. A credit to its design and functionality, many projects will continue to use their existing Blastmate II instruments for many years to come. Instantel is committed to continue to calibrate and service these instruments to ensure that the world’s best-selling vibration monitor is on-site and ready to monitor whenever and wherever you may need it.

The Blastmate III design, launched four years after the introduction of the Blastmate II workhorse, was based on many of the “must-have” attributes of its predecessor. Advancements in technology provided Instantel with the opportunity to give our customers more of what they wanted - expanded capabilities and a wider variety of applications in the field - all in the same rugged and easy-to use format they’d grown to trust.

New Instantel® Flex™ Feature Simplifies Structural Monitoring

Instantel, the leading global supplier of monitoring systems for regulated vibration control, is proud to introduce the new Instantel® Flex™ monitoring mode. The Flex feature provides the flexibility to monitor vibration, along with related measurements such as ambient environmental conditions or structural response in the same time scale, using the same monitor.

“We use the Flex feature to monitor ambient temperature and humidity, along with blast-induced vibration and air overpressure, to evaluate their respective impact on dimensional changes of existing exterior foundation cracks,” says Rob Cyr of Explotech Engineering Limited. “We had originally envisioned a complicated monitoring system, but with Flex we monitor all of the sensors using a single Minimate Plus 8-channel monitor.”

The Flex monitoring mode is part of Instantel’s new Blastware® 8 Advanced Module software, and is compatible with existing Instantel Minimate Plus™ and Blastmate III ™ monitoring systems. With the Flex feature installed, the monitor can easily be configured to monitor various combinations of standard geophone and microphone sensors, along with specialty and compatible third-party sensors, in the same monitoring setup. In addition, the monitor can be set to record either triggered time-history data, long-term interval data, or a combination of the two using the Instantel Histogram Combo™ combined recording mode.

“Property owners commonly evaluate the affect of blast vibration by looking for development or growth of foundation cracks, which often causes a great deal of confusion and debate,” says Cyr.

“Now we can provide owners with convincing evidence that foundation cracks are continuously opening and closing in response to cyclic temperature and humidity changes. In most cases, we can also show them that the impact of blast vibration is relatively minor, and that goes a long way towards improving public relations.”

New Instantel® 1 Hz – 315 Hz Velocity Sensor

Instantel, the leading global supplier of vibration monitors for compliance applications, proudly announces the release of a new triaxial velocity sensor with an operating frequency range from 1 Hz to 315 Hz. The new sensor is designed to comply with the amplitude frequency and phase frequency response requirements outlined in the DIN 45669-1 standard, a popular European standard for vibration monitoring equipment.

“The sensor was designed to fit the requirements for the DIN Class 1 tolerance up to 315 Hz, making it ideal for monitoring vibration near blasting operations,” says Greg Klowak, Instantel Vice President of Research and Development. “It also maintains its response with over 1,000 meters of signal cable, so it will definitely fit a wide range of monitoring applications.”

The new sensor will operate with Instantel® Minimate Plus™ and Blastmate III ™ monitors, equipped with the standard Instantel Blastware® Version 8 Compliance Module software.

Instantel Commissions New Sensor Calibration System
OTTAWA , Canada , Feb. 20, 2004
Instantel has recently commissioned a state-of-the-art calibration station that directly measures the amplitude response of vibration and overpressure sensors. Response graphs will now be provided with new monitors and factory calibrations for documented proof of compliance with regulatory and industry standards, including the International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE) "Performance Specifications for Blasting Seismographs.

"With the introduction of the standard, the ISEE has taken an important step in improving the reliability of vibration and overpressure measurements. However, some of the specifications within the standard require advanced test equipment that has not historically been used in the calibration of blasting seismographs. Instantel decided it was important to tune and verify every sensor to ensure compliance with the standard, so we developed a test system that does it", says Bob Turnbull , Instantel Service Manager.

Conventional calibration procedures test the sensors at only a few select frequencies, and adjustments are made to the response on the basis of this limited data. The new Instantel system allows sensors to be tested and calibrated across a continuous frequency band from 0.5 Hz to 500 Hz, which ensures that the sensors are in compliance across the frequency band. The response curves also define the roll-off characteristics at the frequency limits, so users can better understand the operational frequency band of the sensor.

"We expect to get a lot of feedback on this new system, particularly from regulators, whose only alternative until now was to simply trust the documented sensor specifications provided by the manufacturers" says Robert Lee, Instantel Vice President. "Now they can be shown graphically the amplitude response of the sensor across the entire frequency range, so there is little question as to the performance specifications of the monitoring system."

Instantel Focuses on the Future of Vibration Monitoring

Instantel Inc., the leading manufacturer of vibration monitors for compliance applications, has discontinued the Instantel® VODmate™ velocity of detonation recorder product line, effective January 2004. The company is taking this action so it can concentrate all of its efforts on further enhancements to the Instantel® Blastmate® and Minimate® line of vibration monitors.

"The next few years are going to be very exciting for Instantel customers. We are going to take vibration monitoring technology to a new level, and we recognized the need to focus all our efforts on achieving this goal," says Rob Lee, Business Manager at Instantel.

In planning for the retirement of the VODmate product line, Instantel determined that an alternate source for consumables, like measuring cable and rods, was essential to ensure that the transition was seamless for existing VODmate recorder users. To this end, Instantel reached an agreement with MREL Specialty Explosive Products Limited (www.mrel.com), a recognized leader in VOD measurement and analysis equipment, to provide continued access to these products.

"We were an obvious choice for Instantel, because our MREL® Probecable™ calibrated resistance cable and MREL Proberod™ calibrated resistance rigid probes are fully compatible with VODmate recorders. We are very excited about the new relationship, and we are looking forward to working with existing VODmate recorder users to ensure they continue to realize the benefits of this powerful tool for years to come," says Bill Bauer, Vice President at MREL.

Under the new arrangement, Instantel will continue to provide repair service and calibration at their factory in Ottawa, Canada. Technical support will also continue to be provided by Instantel, however, customers and dealers will now also have the added advantage of secondary technical support from MREL.

These new authorized representatives are Lee Hung Scientific Pte Ltd., Singapore, and Datum Monitoring Services Ltd., United Kingdom.

"With the addition of these two new sites, Instantel now has eight calibration facilities located strategically to service key regions around the world", says Ron Mask, Sales Manager. "We are also working on adding two additional facilities, with one in Hong Kong to service the Chinese market, and one in Brazil to service South America."
